Stop Interruptions

The hardest thing when you work from home is to stop people interrupting you. It could be one of your children, a friend dropping by for a coffee or your partner just wanting a chat.

Set up signals of different colours, so they know when it is ok to enter your working space. All you need is three pieces of paper.

Colour one red, one green and one yellow or orange. The red one means stay out, the green one it is OK to come in, and the yellow one is for check first.

Even quite young children will soon get to learn what each colour means.

As for the friends dropping by for a coffee, you need to let them know that it can only be when you have your lunch break as you still have work to get done even though you are at home.

Take the time to set up some rules, and it will make it easier for you to stay focused.

Move Outside

If you have a shed or a garage that is used just for storage, clear it out and turn it into your work space. Workbenches create multi-functional spaces that can be used as a desk or a surface to create things on. Β

The beauty of this is that it will be seen as your family and friends that you are at work, and they are less likely to disturb you.

It also means that if you are part way through a job at the end of the day, you can leave it exactly where it is with no fear of it being moved.

The main thing with converting a shed or garage is that you need to make sure it is weatherproof, and insulating it is also a good idea.

Then you will be able to work in comfort regardless of if it is raining or sunny.

Having a separate work space is a really useful tip, and is also enjoyable. Having a space that is yours and is dedicated to your work helps you split up your home life.

Define Your Hours Of Work

It is too easy when you work from home to think you will have another coffee before you start, or take a longer lunch break than you should.

Define your working hours as though you were going to a workplace every day, and stick to them. You would not just tag an extra half hour onto your lunch break at the office, so don’t do it at home either.

This helps keep you in the working mindset, and that you take your work seriously. It can be easy to put things off when you’re your own boss. Make sure you don’t by being a stricter boss to yourself!

Keep In Touch With Bosses And Co-Workers

With today’s technology, there is no reason not to keep in touch with your co-workers and your boss several times a day. You should have a chat with them just like you would if you were all in the same workplace.

Your colleagues could be in the same position as you, and having discussions about the work you are all doing could prove vital to you and them working from home being successful.

Working from home can be very rewarding if you do it right!
